The Hungry Havemans

Welcome to our family!

Welcome to our Blog! Not only do we provide “Business Services”, we are also a family that loves to eat! We get together every week to chow down for bonding time. Here you can read up on the best places to eat around the Black Hills area!

Our family is made up of Cathy and Robert of course. I am Robert’s wife Gail Haveman. Robert and I have two beautiful children. Our kiddos have ADHD and ASD, which means we have to be prepared for sensory overload. I have many allergies and sensitivities, and both kids are beyond picky eaters. We dine every week with Great-Grandpa Mel Haveman (who is 90!), my mother-in-law Cathy Haveman, and my aunt-in-law Laurie. We have a variety of needs, “like where are we going to park Great-Grandpa’s walker?”, so when a restaurant meets all of our needs, we want to give them a positive shout out!

For our first shout out we would like to feature The Salt Block. The ambience is rustic and modern. We have been here many times! This place is always busy, and yet service is prompt. There is diverse indoor and outdoor seating with a great view! There is a full bar with craft beers to choose from on Digital Poor. You can watch games on the many TVs if that’s your vibe. Even though there are usually many people, we feel like we have plenty of privacy. It can be difficult to hear eachother at times, but this isn’t a deal breaker for us.

We switch up the appetizers when we come in, and this time we chose the eggrolls. Unfortunately I could only give them a taste due to my corn allergy, but they are super delicious! Great-Grandpa Mel ordered the Papa D’s Burger with some side winders. Sometimes he’s in the mood for a Coors Light or Carona, but this night he stuck with water. Mom (Cathy) had a glass of red wine with her burger. Laurie ordered the PB&J Burger, and my son who has ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) loves to order Sprite and the pretzel AND NOTHING ELSE. Fun Fact: The Salt Block makes their own salt for their pretzels! My eldest child loves to order a Coke and the mac and cheese AND NOTHING ELSE. Laurie and Robert are bonded in their love for dark beers, and of course had some with their burgers.

Notice I have created an entirely new paragraph for my order. This order is one of the best concotions I’ve ever had. It is I who insist on coming here for this order, and here it is. I order the loaded cajun sidewinders appetizer. This includes beer cheese, jalapenos, bacon, and cajun seasoning. That is not all! I top that succulent pile of potatoes with ANOTHER appetizer, the BBQ burnt ends! The BBQ burnt ends are turkey, smothered in a house made BBQ sauce. The best part? They are completely allergy friendly! YUM! I enjoyed my meal with a spiked Blackberry Lemonade made in Minnesota! We give this place 4 stars for having delicious food, great service, and nice ambience. We will definitely be back!

The Salt Block offers many other delicious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (or supper if you’re from the country). Hours are 10:30 AM to 10:00 PM Monday-Friday, opening earlier at 8:00 AM on Saturdays and Sundays for breakfast/brunch. Location : 7201 Mount Rushmore Rd Ste 600, Rapid City, SD 57702-8756
